How To Get a Learners Permit In Georgia
Reader’s Question:
I live in Georgia, I just want to know how can I get my learner’s permit?
Lisa
Good Question Lisa
Fifteen year olds can apply for the learner’s permit with their parents or with their guardians. A teenager should still be in school or must show proof of graduation before they can get their learner’s permit. Before you can apply for the learner’s permit, you will need the following requirements to the local driver’s license office:
1. certified birth certificate or birth registration
2. certified court papers showing adoption or name change if applicable
3. social security card
4. certificate of attendance that is signed by an official at your school
5. your parent or guardian will need to sign permission for you to obtain the learners permit
6. payment of $10 license fee
You will also need to take the written and vision test. You may study the Georgia driver’s manual so you can learn more about traffic laws , safety, traffic signals and other rules on the road.
Once you get your permit, it will be valid for 24 months. You should avoid getting a ticket at that time because your permit may be suspended even if you pay the fine.

Tips On How To Register a Car In Georgia
Reader’s Question:
How do I register my car in Georgia?
Tammy
Good Question.
It is highly recommended to register a car in the state of Georgia before processing a driver’s license. Your fist stop if you are new in the state is the driver’s license office. The vehicle must be registered within the 30 days of purchase or 30 days of residency and then you will need to reapply for a new tag every year. If you are registering a vehicle, applying for the title can be done with the same application.
You may call your county tax commissioner since Georgia counties varies in their requirements for registering vehicles.
Here are some documentations you will be needing to register your vehicle:
1. Valid Georgia driver’s license
2. valid out of state title or the certificate of origin of the manufacturer if the vehicle is new.
3. completed title application
4. proof of insurance. You will need a minimum liability insurance required in the state of Georgia.
5. proof that your car passed the emission test
6. fees and taxes.
7. If the vehicle that you are registering is not eligible for the titling in
Georgia, or if it comes from the area that does not need titling, the vehicle must be inspected prior to the registration by a tag agent or any law enforcement officer. Part of the inspection is verifying that the car is not stolen.

Where Do You Find Georgia Car Insurance Company Ratings?
Reader question:
How do I know that my Georgia car insurance company will be able to settle my claim?
Megan
Thanks for asking, Megan!
That is actually a very good question, and I think the best way to address it would be to go back to square one. When you are figuring out whether or not an car insurance company will be able to settle your claim if filed, you should not be to the point where you are calling it your own company yet. This is a step that you should take while you are still in the process of shopping around for an insurance policy.
- Georgia car insurance companies have ratings, too!
That’s right, they can’t just rate you–other companies rate them as well. There are several companies which rate car insurance providers on standards ranging from customer service to financial stability. An insurance company might quote you some fantastic low ball quote, but that’s a perfect incentive to check its financial rating and make sure there isn’t some tricky reason behind that low quote. Unless you’re getting involved with a national car insurance company that obviously has enough money to cover you, then you should check.
There are two main companies that provide you with the information you need on insurance companies:
- Standard & Poor’s: this is the most popular financial rating company and the most helpful. Not only does it rate Georgia car insurance companies, but it also provides profiles for more than four thousand of them.
- Fitch Ratings: also a good source, this company provides only ratings.
One thing that these companies use to rate the insurance companies is the length of time that they have been in business. If the company just started up last week, then there won’t be any information, and that right there is a good reason to avoid it.

Fashun Guadarrama.

Can I Get a Copy Of My Driving Record In Georgia?
Reader’s question:
Can I get a copy of my Georgia driving record if I go to the local Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles? Will they be able to get my traffic tickets from my previous residence from a different state 2 years ago?
Matt
Good question.
The Georgia DMV does not allow you to obtain a copy of your driving record. But you may be able to download a non certified copy of your driving record through the DDS website or you may go to the DDS customer service center.
You will be needing your driver’s license number, a date and birth and a password where you can request online before you can download the information you need. There is also a fee that you will need to pay. It is $5 for 3 year record and $7 for a 7 year record. Remember that it is only a non certified copy of your driving history.
Your Georgia driving record can also be purchased in person at the DDS customer service center with proper identification. You also have the option to send a request through mail. You will need to submit a notarized letter requesting either the 3 or 7 years of your driving history and provide other information so the DDS can process your request.
You can call DDS to get more information if you want to use this option.

Does Georgia Have an Auto Insurance Point System?
Reader’s Question:
Does Georgia and Florida have the same point system? Does Georgia report speeding ticket to Florida?
Ben
Good Question.
Georgia is not part of the Drivers License Compact where the Florida is a member of, but the Georgia Driver’s services still sends licensed driver’s information to their home state of any conviction they will receive in the state of Georgia. So if you get convicted of speeding violation in Georgia, the court will still notify the state of Florida if that is where you are licensed.
If you receive a traffic ticket out of state and they receive that information, The Highway Safety and Motor Services will add the violation to your record, according to the Florida of Highway Safety Motor Services. 15 MPH or less or over lawful speed limit is 3 points and 16 MPH or more over the posted speed limit is 4 points in Florida.
It is noted in the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Services that it will not be allowed by the Florida Law for any school or program to remove the points for the ticket or any convictions that was received from another state. This means that you cannot take any Florida driving class or take any driving course to remove the ticket from Georgia or points that was assigned to your driving record.

Can You Stop Paying For Car Insurance In Georgia?
Reader’s question:
I live in Georgia. I would like to know what would happen if I stop paying for my car insurance?
Archie
Good question.
If you stop paying for your insurance policy, your insurance company will cancel your insurance due to non payment and that would definitely cause you trouble. This cancellation will appear in your credit history and would be black mark on your credit report as non-payment. This might result on you having a hard time getting a car insurance in the future.
Most of the insurance companies would not insure an individual that has not previously paid on their policy. If due to non payment your insurance lapsed, your insurance company will inform the Georgia Department of Revenue a notice of termination or cancellation of insurance. A Notice of Lapse Mandatory Liability Insurance Coverage will be mailed to you once the DOR sees that you are uninsured. The notice will request you to pay a $25 lapse fee and would require you to show proof of valid car insurance coverage within 30 days. If you fail to pay the fee and show proof of insurance, your vehicle registration will be suspended or revoked. If you drive with suspended vehicle registration is considered a misdemeanor. You will also be subject to fines and vehicle impoundment if you are caught driving without car insurance coverage.
